AFC Champions: Pats Are Back In The Super Bowl After Downing The Denver Broncos

The Patriots secured a 10–7 victory over the Broncos in a snow-filled AFC Championship Game, maintaining their lead despite worsening weather conditions in the fourth quarter. New England took control early in the second half with a long drive that ended in a field goal, and Denver was unable to respond offensively for the remainder of the game. The Broncos’ best opportunity to tie the score came on a 46-yard field goal attempt, but defensive lineman Leonard Taylor deflected Wil Lutz’s kick to preserve the Patriots’ advantage.

Denver mounted one final drive after forcing a punt with just over three minutes remaining, but quarterback Jarrett Stidham was intercepted by cornerback Christian Gonzalez. On the ensuing possession, the Patriots leaned on quarterback Drake Maye to seal the outcome. Facing a critical third-and-5 after the two-minute warning, Maye scrambled for seven yards to move the chains, allowing New England to kneel out the clock and advance to Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium.

Maye’s mobility was a decisive factor throughout the game. He scored New England’s lone touchdown on a six-yard run following a Stidham fumble in the second quarter and later produced a 28-yard run that set up the Patriots’ only second-half points. With snow and wind intensifying late, New England shifted to a ground-heavy approach, as Maye finished with 65 rushing yards and Rhamondre Stevenson added 71 to help control the tempo.

Stidham, making his first start since the end of the 2023 season, finished 17-of-31 for 133 yards with a touchdown and an interception. His lack of game action showed at times, particularly on the costly fumble that led directly to New England’s touchdown. Denver’s offensive struggles were compounded by dropped passes and a key second-quarter decision by head coach Sean Payton to bypass a short field goal on fourth-and-1, a choice that loomed larger as points became scarce.

Strategic decisions and execution ultimately tilted the game in New England’s favor. The Patriots capitalized on a successful fourth-down sneak in the third quarter, while Denver lost a timeout on an unsuccessful challenge. As the Broncos reflect on missed chances and injuries, the Patriots now turn their attention to the Super Bowl, where they will aim to capture a seventh championship in franchise history.
