AFC Championship: Ups And Downs From Sunday's Super Bowl Berth

The New England Patriots delivered another dominant defensive performance to defeat the Denver Broncos in a snowy AFC Championship Game at Mile High Stadium, earning a trip to Super Bowl LX. Harsh weather dictated much of the action, turning the second half into a grind where offenses struggled to move the ball. In those conditions, New England made the critical plays, holding Denver to just 181 total yards while quarterback Drake Maye finished with 86 passing yards in a low-scoring, physical battle.

One of the biggest moments came late in the fourth quarter when defensive tackle Leonard Taylor III partially blocked a 45-yard field goal attempt by Broncos kicker Wil Lutz. The play preserved the Patriots’ slim lead and capped a remarkable journey for Taylor, who began the season on another team’s roster before earning his opportunity in New England and capitalizing in the biggest moment.

The Patriots’ interior defensive line was especially dominant. Milton Williams consistently generated push up front, recording two quarterback hits and helping limit Denver to 79 rushing yards. Alongside him, Christian Barmore was a force against both the run and the pass, including a sack where he overpowered All-Pro guard Quinn Meinerz to bring down Jarrett Stidham.

In the secondary, cornerback Christian Gonzalez rebounded from an early deep-ball mistake to make the game-sealing play, intercepting Stidham in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Christian Elliss also played a pivotal role, forcing a key fumble that set up New England’s only touchdown and finishing with four tackles, a sack, and the turnover.

Special teams and field position proved crucial in the snow. Brenden Schooler stood out with impactful coverage plays, continuing the Patriots’ tradition of elite special teams contributors. While punter Bryce Baringer struggled in the conditions, the collective effort of New England’s defense and special teams ultimately carried the Patriots through an ugly, weather-driven game and into the Super Bowl.
