Despite being widely regarded as the greatest coach in NFL history and winning a record six Super Bowls with the Patriots, Belichick was informed that he would not be inducted into this year’s Pro Football Hall of Fame class. After nearly 50 years coaching in the NFL, Belichick made the unexpected decision to leave professional football and take over as head coach at the University of North Carolina. He signed a five-year, $50m deal, an unprecedented investment for the school, and debuted in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 50,000 fans. When Brady left for Tampa Bay in 2020 and won another Super Bowl, Belichick’s Patriots declined sharply.

Following consecutive losing seasons, Belichick and the Patriots parted ways in January 2024. He was unable to secure another NFL head coaching position, a development some described as a stunning rejection by the league. This marked the first time since 1975 that Belichick was without a football job, making North Carolina’s offer both a lifeline and a gamble for his legacy.

Belichick’s time at North Carolina was also overshadowed by intense media attention on his personal life, particularly his relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson. The relationship generated widespread gossip and headlines, adding distractions that contrasted sharply with Belichick’s historically guarded and disciplined public image. While not blamed for the team’s on-field struggles, the attention contributed to a sense that Belichick was no longer able to control the narrative around him.
