Like Bill Belichick, Bob Kraft Will Have To Wait At Least Another Year To Be Inducted Into The Hall Of Fame

Neither Bill Belichick nor New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026. Both men failed to reach the required voting threshold set by the 50-member senior committee, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. To be elected, a finalist needed votes from at least 80% of the committee, with each voter allowed to select up to three of the five finalists. Despite their central roles in one of the most dominant dynasties in modern professional sports, neither Belichick nor Kraft secured enough support.

Belichick and Kraft were key figures in the Patriots’ historic run over 24 seasons together, during which the team reached nine Super Bowls and won six championships. Kraft, who purchased the franchise in 1994, also oversaw an earlier Super Bowl appearance before Belichick became head coach. The Patriots are set to appear in yet another Super Bowl this Sunday, facing the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, underscoring the enduring legacy of the organization they built.

Belichick’s exclusion was especially controversial because this was his first year of eligibility, a moment when legendary coaches are often inducted without delay. The decision sparked widespread criticism of both the voters and the senior committee system, which operates separately from the process used for modern-era candidates. Many observers questioned how a coach widely regarded as the greatest of all time could fall short in his initial year on the ballot.

Kraft publicly defended Belichick following the snub, issuing a statement that praised his former coach as “the greatest coach of all time” and said he deserved unanimous, first-ballot induction. Kraft emphasized that any personal tensions stemming from their split in 2024 should not overshadow Belichick’s accomplishments, pointing to his unparalleled success and influence in the free agency and salary cap era of the NFL.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell weighed in during Super Bowl week, expressing confidence that both Belichick and Kraft will eventually be inducted. He described each as “spectacular” contributors to the game and suggested that Belichick’s omission was largely a matter of timing rather than merit. Goodell acknowledged the crowded and competitive nature of Hall of Fame voting, but reiterated his belief that Belichick’s résumé clearly warrants enshrinement in Canton.
