Jahlani Tavai recently opened up about an extremely difficult past year, marked by serious personal and health challenges. After dealing with repeated soft-tissue injuries leading up to training camp, the Patriots linebacker was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease affecting his head. The diagnosis brought fear and uncertainty for both him and his family, though he emphasized that doctors were able to manage the condition and allow him to continue playing.
Tavai also endured profound personal loss in late November when his partner, Kalei Mau, developed a rare blood infection, resulting in the loss of their unborn daughter, Ka ua. He expressed deep gratitude for the support he received from teammates, coaches, and staff, noting that their presence and messages during the hospital stay meant a great deal to him and his family.
In recognition of his perseverance and character, Tavai was named the New England Patriots’ Ed Block Courage Award winner, an honor given to players who exemplify courage, sportsmanship, and professionalism. While appreciative of the award, Tavai admitted he is still processing the recognition, as his focus remains on preparing for the Patriots’ Divisional Round playoff game against the Houston Texans.
On the field, the 29-year-old linebacker has contributed steadily this season, appearing in 12 regular-season games with 21 tackles and adding three more in New England’s Wild Card playoff victory over the Chargers.
