Patriots: Chargers @ Patriots Halftime Thoughts
Share
At halftime of the Wild Card game between the Patriots and Chargers, the score is tied 3–3 after a sluggish and defense-heavy first half. Neither team has been able to find consistent offensive rhythm, with both going just 1-for-5 on third downs and each recording only eight first downs. Despite the low score, New England has slightly outgained Los Angeles, 171 yards to 117.
The Patriots opened the scoring early in the second quarter when rookie kicker Andy Borregales converted a 23-yard field goal after a long drive. The Chargers answered with a 21-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker following a possession that reached deep into Patriots territory after Los Angeles had earlier failed on a fourth-down attempt. New England then closed the half by regaining the lead briefly on Borregales’ 35-yard field goal.
Quarterback Drake Maye has had a mixed first half for New England. He is 6-of-15 passing for 95 yards with one interception, which came off a tipped pass, but he has also been the Patriots’ most effective runner, gaining 55 yards on five carries, including a 37-yard scramble late in the second quarter. For the Chargers, Justin Herbert has been efficient, completing 10 of 13 passes for 93 yards, with Keenan Allen leading the way with three catches for 25 yards.
In terms of injuries, Patriots cornerback Carlton Davis is questionable to return in the second half after suffering a toe injury, which could affect New England’s secondary as the game continues.
