Mike Vrabel, head coach of the New England Patriots, announced he will be away from the team during the third day of the NFL Draft to begin counseling. In a statement, Vrabel explained that he wants to be the best version of himself for his family, team, and organization, and believes seeking professional help is the right step. He acknowledged that the decision was difficult but emphasized that he wants to lead by example and improve as a husband, father, and coach.
The decision follows public scrutiny after photos surfaced, published by the New York Post, that appeared to show Vrabel in a close personal moment with former reporter Dianna Russini at an Arizona resort. Vrabel addressed the situation earlier in the week, describing it as a private matter, but admitted he has had “difficult” yet ultimately constructive conversations with his family, the organization, and team members. He characterized those discussions as positive and part of taking accountability for his actions.
Despite his absence, Vrabel said he will remain in communication with the Patriots during the draft’s final day. He expressed confidence in the team’s leadership, particularly executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf and vice president Ryan Cowden, to manage operations in the draft room. The Patriots hold 11 total picks in the draft, including the No. 31 selection in the first round, with a heavy concentration, eight picks, scheduled for the final day across the fourth through seventh rounds.
