Patriots: Quick Look at the Houston Texans

The New England Patriots advanced to the divisional round after a 16–3 win over the Chargers and now face a surging Houston Texans team. Houston earned its spot by defeating the Steelers 30–6, scoring three fourth-quarter touchdowns. Although New England finished the regular season strong, the Texans may be the NFL’s hottest team, having rebounded from a 3–5 start to win 10 straight games with an average margin of nearly nine points.

The Texans’ success is driven primarily by an elite defense. Led by All-Pros Will Anderson Jr. and Derek Stingley Jr., Houston ranks at or near the top of the league in most advanced defensive metrics, including yards allowed, scoring rate, and EPA. The unit has consistently forced turnovers and limited production, most recently holding Pittsburgh to just six points and 175 yards. This defense represents the toughest challenge yet for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, who showed flashes but also struggled at times against the Chargers.

Offensively, Houston complements its defense by playing clean, mistake-free football. Coordinated by former Patriots assistant Nick Caley, the Texans lead the NFL in turnover avoidance. Quarterback C.J. Stroud has been efficient and productive, spreading the ball primarily to Nico Collins and Dalton Schultz, while also benefiting from timely contributions such as Christian Kirk’s breakout performance against Pittsburgh.

There is some familiarity between the teams, particularly for Maye, who made his first NFL start against Houston last season in a loss. While he showed promise in that game, turnovers were an issue. This upcoming matchup offers a very different context, but the Texans’ balance, discipline, and defensive dominance make them a formidable opponent as the Patriots look to continue their playoff run.
