Patriots: Injury Update on Cornerback Christian Gonzalez
Share
The Patriots are closely monitoring the status of top cornerback Christian Gonzalez as the team prepares for their AFC divisional playoff game under head coach Mike Vrabel. Gonzalez left New England’s wild-card win with a head injury and has been placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol, making his availability for this weekend uncertain. Gonzalez suffered the head injury when Chargers' wide receiver Quentin Johnston landed on his head after a play. While the contact did not initially appear severe, Gonzalez was removed from the game as a precaution and did not return. The Patriots went on to secure a 16–3 victory without him. Vrabel confirmed that because Gonzalez did not return to the game, entering the protocol was mandatory, and the length of his absence will depend on how he progresses through it.
Although Gonzalez was present in the locker room after the win and said he was “fine,” he was not cleared to speak with the media. Under the NFL’s return-to-participation rules, players must complete a five-step process that gradually increases activity, moving from exercise to non-contact practice and eventually full contact, with final clearance coming from an independent neurologist. Each player’s recovery timeline varies, as shown by recent examples on the Patriots’ roster.
Gonzalez, 23, enjoyed a breakout season, earning his first Pro Bowl selection after recording 10 pass breakups and 69 tackles in 14 games. He continued to impact games in the postseason, notching two pass breakups against Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. Vrabel praised Gonzalez’s versatility and ability to handle different coverages and assignments, emphasizing how valuable he has been to the defense.
Whether Gonzalez can return in time for the Patriots’ next playoff matchup against either the Texans remains unclear. Still, the team is hopeful he will be cleared, recognizing both his high level of play and his importance to New England’s defensive game plan.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel offered an encouraging update on Christian Gonzalez’s status, saying he expects the Pro Bowl cornerback to practice despite being in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Vrabel made the comment Monday, signaling early optimism about Gonzalez’s availability as New England prepares for the AFC divisional round.
Gonzalez was seen at Patriots practice on Wednesday, wearing a red "non-contact" jersey. As per the NFL's concussion return to participation protocol, the non-contact jersey indicates that Gonzalez is in phase 4 of the 5 phase protocol. This is a very positive sign that we will see Gonzo out there on Sunday against the Houston Texans.
Gonzalez is a critical piece of New England’s defense, having been targeted five times against the Chargers without allowing a single reception. His presence significantly strengthens the Patriots’ secondary, and the team’s confidence is notably higher when he is on the field.
