Patriots: Why The Altitude Shouldn't Pose An Issue For The Patriots Today

Research on altitude physiology suggests that if a team cannot fully acclimatize ( typically 7–14 days), it’s generally better to arrive very close to competition (around 18–24 hours prior) rather than 1–3 days before. The first day at altitude brings hypoxia but avoids many of the maladaptive responses; plasma volume loss, sleep disruption, and elevated fatigue that peak around 24–72 hours and are associated with the poorest performance. That middle window is typically the worst compromise.
Applied to New England playing in Denver (~1,600 m), arriving late Friday night or Saturday for a Sunday game is often more optimal than arriving earlier in the week, assuming travel fatigue and logistics are managed, which they certainly are for NFL teams. Football’s intermittent, largely anaerobic nature also tolerates “arrive-and-play” strategies better than endurance sports, which is why many teams intentionally minimize time spent at altitude when full acclimatization isn’t possible.
