Robert Kraft: Patriots offered Christian Gonzalez record-breaking deal

Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced that the team has made Christian Gonzalez a contract extension offer that would make him both the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL and the highest-paid player in Patriots franchise history. Speaking on the first day of training camp, Kraft praised Gonzalez as both a player and a person, emphasizing the organization's desire to keep him in New England for many years after drafting and developing him.

Gonzalez became eligible for a contract extension this offseason after being selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. If he accepts the offer, his deal would surpass the current cornerback market, which is led by Trent McDuffie’s four-year, $131 million contract. It would also exceed the Patriots' previous record contracts, including Milton Williams’ four-year, $104 million deal and A.J. Brown’s $32 million average annual salary.

Despite ongoing contract negotiations, Gonzalez reported to training camp after missing much of the Patriots' offseason workout program. He participated on a limited basis during mandatory minicamp, and head coach Mike Vrabel said he expects Gonzalez's involvement to increase throughout training camp even if a new deal has not yet been finalized.

Vrabel also dismissed the idea that the Patriots are waiting for Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon—who shares the same agent as Gonzalez and is also eligible for an extension—to sign a new contract first. Gonzalez has previously expressed that he hopes to remain with the Patriots and be rewarded with a long-term deal, and the team's record-setting offer demonstrates its commitment to making that happen.
