The Patriots Are Ready For The 2026 NFL Combine

The New England Patriots are quickly shifting into offseason mode as head coach Mike Vrabel prepares for the NFL scouting combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. Because the team’s season ran longer than expected, Vrabel hasn’t evaluated as many prospects during the year and will rely heavily on the scouting work already done by the personnel department led by Eliot Wolf. According to ESPN draft analyst Field Yates, the 2026 NFL draft class lacks elite quarterback talent and overall blue-chip prospects, which could shape how teams approach early selections.
Holding the No. 31 pick and 11 total selections, New England is unlikely to land the few elite prospects projected at the very top of the draft. Offensive line and edge rusher appear to be major areas of focus. Possible first-round offensive linemen include Utah’s Caleb Lomu, Arizona State’s Max Iheanachor, Alabama’s Kadyn Proctor and Texas A&M’s Chase Bisontis. The edge rusher group is considered deep, with players such as Missouri’s Zion Young, Texas A&M’s Cashius Howell, Miami’s Akheem Mesidor and Clemson’s T.J. Parker potentially available late in the first round.
Tight end is another position the Patriots could address as starter Hunter Henry is entering his 30s and Austin Hooper may leave in free agency. Oregon’s Kenyon Sadiq is viewed as the only likely first-round tight end, while several others are projected for Day 2 or later. At wide receiver, the class is considered deep rather than top-heavy. If top options are gone by pick 31, players like Texas A&M’s KC Concepcion or Indiana’s Omar Cooper Jr. could be targets, with several athletic receivers expected to be available in later rounds.
The Patriots’ leadership will speak with the media during the combine week, with Wolf scheduled Tuesday and Vrabel on Wednesday. Looking ahead to the 2026 season, sportsbooks project the team to win around 9.5 games, down from their 14 wins in 2025, partly due to a challenging schedule that includes matchups with teams like the Packers, Chiefs, Lions and Steelers.
On the coaching front, the team followed league hiring rules before promoting linebackers coach Zak Kuhr to defensive coordinator, interviewing Browns assistant Ephraim Banda as part of the process. The Patriots also added B.J. Edmonds, previously a running backs coach at Southern Mississippi, as a defensive assistant. Meanwhile, the roster currently sits at 64 players after signing cornerback Brandon Crossley to a futures contract, leaving room for draft picks and offseason additions.
